Bar Version

29. Scared by an Ass

Bottom's "translation" is as well choreographed a scene as in the other versions. Deguchi's ingenuity in directing comic scenes is well exhibited here. Since shingeki and its audiences used to prefer serious and often cerebral plays regardless of their genres, Shingeki companies were not good at staging comic scenes by and large. One of the features of recent or "post-Deguchi" Shakespeares in Japan would be the comicality of their performances, which is closely related to the rise of the Little Theatre Movement (Shougekijou undou) in the early 1970s.
