Bottom's
"translation" is as well choreographed a scene as in the
other versions. Deguchi's ingenuity in directing comic
scenes is well exhibited here. Since shingeki and its audiences used to
prefer serious and often cerebral plays regardless of their
genres, Shingeki companies were not good at staging comic
scenes by and large. One of the features of recent or
"post-Deguchi" Shakespeares in Japan would be the comicality
of their performances, which is closely related to the rise
of the Little Theatre Movement (Shougekijou
undou) in
the early 1970s.
