Bar Version

45. Pyramus & Wall

Unlike the other versions, this dumbshow is done "straight" without tunes to sing. Wall/Snout's comic responses to Bottom resemble a routine from a brief comic show (Manzai). Wall raises his arms to reply to Bottom's "O wall, O sweet, O lovely wall", and also offers to shake hands with Bottom in the next line, "That stand'st between her father's ground and mine". In response to Bottom's request ("Show me thy chink"), Wall makes a gesture to signify "OK", performs dance steps, and makes a V sign, which becomes the chink. With the words "Curs'd be thy stones for thus deceiving me!", Bottom beats Wall's chest with "karate" chops. Tough guy Wall takes these eagerly on the tensed muscles which bulge under the 'brick' of his tight T-shirt. (In Mask 39. Pyramus & Wall, Wall is weak-chested and coughs.) Perhaps this is a director's joke directed at the Shingeki approach to "Building a Character"?
