School Version

6. Forward Helena

Helena, who is given the more 'forward' lines in the text, here wears a sleeveless dress with a neckline much lower than that of the more conservatively dressed Hermia, who also wears child-like pink ribbons. However, a certain ambiguity is maintained by having Helena's skirt longer than Hermia's. As Deguchi has said in interview, "Actors have to balance contradiction".

Helena's odd-one-out status is marked by her squatting where Hermia and Lysander kneel.

Note that this scene in the Bar version (Bar 6. Lovers & Mechanicals) juxtaposes the lovers seated on the floor with customers sitting on chairs at a bar table.

Its equivalent in the Mask version (Mask 3. Masks & Stylisation ) shows Helena in a much less revealing dress, one that is virtually identical to Hermia's.
