24. Geisha
Thisbe
To signify "woman"
in two cultures, Flute holds a rose and puts a comb in his
hair. The unconscious of this text is represented in his
legs which, unlike a geisha's - or like a stereotypically
male view of geisha - are wide apart. Quince
remonstrates.
In the Mask version
(Mask 19.
Transformation routines), Flute wears his takeaway restaurant
uniform, but still holds a flower, and squats on stage in a
masculine fashion, though his voice and gestures seem to be
stereotypically 'gay'.
